Louisa Presbyterian Church

Children's Ministries

Sunday School Classes

Our youth Sunday School class is held in the sanctuary at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings.  A "pre-school" Sunday School is also offered for 2- to 4-year-olds.

Children's Participation in Worship

Lighting the Candles

Each week, a member of our youth begins our worship service by lighting the candles on the communion table.  At the close of worship, our Acolyte* extinguishes the candle and takes the light out of the sanctuary, symbolizing our taking Christ's light out into the world.  (*The definition of an acolyte is "a non-ordained person who assists in a worship service by performing actions such as carrying a cross or lighting candles." Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms)

Time for Young Disciples

The children of the church come forward to participate in a children's sermon during the "Time for Young Disciples."  Members of the congregation and our pastor take turns to minister to our youth with a biblical word, story, or song.  If you wish to lead the children's sermon on a particular Sunday, we have materials available from which you can choose.   The sign-up sheet is located in the adult Sunday School room.

Cents-Ability Offering Collection

The kids take up the Cents-Ability offering on the first Sunday of the month.  Cents-Ability (formerly known as "Two-Cents-a-Meal") is an offering that is collected specifically for feeding the hungry in our community, in central Virginia, and around the world.  Each time we sit down to eat a meal, we are asked to set aside our loose change.  Once a month, we bring in our change and the children take up the offering.

Food Pantry Collection

All through the month, our members and friends bring in food for the local Food Pantry.  On the last Sunday of the  month, the children bring the food into the worship service (during the Time for Young Disciples) and present it as an offering.  The congregation joins in prayer to bless the food before it is taken to the Food Pantry later that week.

Nursery

Following the "Time for Young Disciples," the youngest members of our congregation slip out to attend nursery with volunteers from our congregation.

Summer Day Camp

Each summer, Louisa Presbyterian sponsors and hosts a Day Camp for rising 1st—6th graders. Day Camp is a great chance for kids to make new friends and to experience Christian fellowship under the supervision of a director and two camp counselors from Camp Hanover, a Presbyterian Camp located in Hanover County.

Day Camp is held daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for one week each July.  There is a Biblical theme for the week encompassing the daily scriptures that are used.  A Thursday evening program is held at the church. (presented by the day campers) followed by an ice cream social. The cost for Day Camp is $90.00 per camper, but the church offers scholarships for each camper bringing down the cost to $25.00 per camper.  To request an aplication for Day Camp, please contact us by email or telephone.

Adopted Little League Team

Last summer, Louisa Presbyterian sponsored a Little League Team (the "Angels") of twelve boys and two coaches.  We are looking forward to sponsoring a team again next summer.  The Little League field is located directly across the street from the church, and we are looking at ways to better support the Little League community and their children.  In particular, we are considering how we can help support parents who come to watch their child play baseball but have their other (younger) children with them.  It is difficult for parents to be able to watch both their kids playing ball and those playing all around them.  We are hoping that next summer, our church will be able to better serve them.  More information will be coming.
